Everyday Movement

Small adjustments can make movement easier

Getting Dressed

If standing on one leg increases your pain, consider sitting down while dressing instead of balancing on one leg.

Getting in the Car

Keeping your knees together while getting in and out of the car may reduce uncomfortable separation of the legs.

Turning in Bed

A pillow between the legs can provide additional support. Your physiotherapist can also guide you towards more comfortable movement strategies.

Staying Active

Staying gently active can be helpful, while avoiding activities or movements that consistently make your symptoms worse. Pacing and regular changes of position may also help.

A Note on Safety

Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain is treatable, but pelvic pain during pregnancy can have different causes. Seek medical advice if you are unsure about your symptoms, particularly if the pain is severe, unusual or accompanied by other concerning pregnancy symptoms.

Severe or rapidly worsening pain
Fainting, severe dizziness or feeling very unwell
Difficulty breathing or chest pain
Pain accompanied by other concerning pregnancy symptoms

FAQs

Pregnancy-related pelvic pain, answered.

What is pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain? +
Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain (PGP) describes pain in and around the pelvic girdle during pregnancy. It may be felt at the front or back of the pelvis and can extend towards the hips, groin or thighs.
Is pelvic girdle pain harmful to my baby? +
PGP itself is not considered harmful to the baby, although it can be painful and may affect mobility and quality of life. If you are unsure whether your symptoms are PGP, speak with your obstetrician, midwife or doctor.
Can physiotherapy help during pregnancy? +
Physiotherapy can help manage symptoms through individualized exercise advice, movement and activity guidance, pain-management strategies and, when appropriate, support options such as a non-rigid pelvic or lumbopelvic support.
Can I still walk and stay active? +
Staying active within your comfort level is generally encouraged. However, activities that repeatedly worsen your pain may need to be modified. Your physiotherapist can help you find comfortable ways to stay mobile.
