Feeling weak when lifting or carrying your baby 02
Difficulty returning to exercise after childbirth 03
Reduced trunk stability during movement 04
Back discomfort during everyday activities 05
Difficulty with prolonged standing or walking 06
Loss of confidence when exercising or lifting 07
How We Help

Rebuild your core progressively — not aggressively

I

Postpartum Movement Assessment

We assess your posture, breathing, trunk control, movement patterns and functional limitations to understand where rehabilitation should begin.

II

Deep Core Activation

Your programme may include breathing and controlled abdominal activation exercises designed to rebuild coordination and trunk control gradually.

III

Progressive Strengthening

As your control improves, exercises can progress from basic movements towards functional strengthening, lifting and everyday activities.

IV

Return to Exercise

Rehabilitation can gradually prepare you for walking, strength training, carrying your baby and eventually more demanding exercise according to your recovery.

Everyday Recovery

Baby Care

Lifting

Lifting can be gradually reintroduced according to your recovery, with attention to breathing, trunk control and overall strength.

Walking

Walking and other low-impact activities can be progressed according to your symptoms and functional tolerance.

Exercise

Your programme can gradually progress towards resistance training and higher-level exercise when appropriate for your stage of recovery.

An Important Point

Postpartum recovery is not a race. Core rehabilitation should be progressive and individualized, especially when there is pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, abdominal separation or difficulty returning to exercise.

When postpartum symptoms need medical assessment

Not every postpartum symptom is simply muscle weakness. Medical assessment may be appropriate if symptoms are severe, unexplained or worsening.

Severe or worsening abdominal or pelvic pain
Heavy or unexpected bleeding
Fever or feeling significantly unwell
New neurological symptoms or significant weakness
New loss of bladder or bowel control
A concerning wound or postoperative complication

FAQs

Postpartum core weakness, answered.

What is postpartum core weakness? +
Postpartum core weakness describes reduced strength, endurance or coordination of the muscles that contribute to trunk and pelvic stability after pregnancy and childbirth.
Why does my core feel weak after pregnancy? +
Pregnancy changes the abdominal wall, breathing mechanics, posture and load placed on the trunk. Recovery after childbirth can therefore involve rebuilding strength, endurance and coordination over time.
Can physiotherapy help rebuild postpartum core strength? +
Physiotherapy can help assess movement and muscle function and develop a progressive programme that addresses strength, coordination and functional goals.
When can I start postpartum core exercises? +
The appropriate starting point depends on your delivery, recovery, symptoms and medical circumstances. Exercise should be progressed according to individual recovery rather than following one identical timeline for everyone.
Can I exercise after a C-section? +
Recovery after a C-section requires consideration of the surgical wound and individual healing. A physiotherapist can help you progress movement and strengthening appropriately, while medical advice should be followed regarding surgical recovery.
Does postpartum core weakness mean I have diastasis recti? +
Not necessarily. Core weakness and diastasis recti are not the same thing. An assessment can help determine whether abdominal wall changes, strength deficits, movement control or other factors are contributing to your symptoms.
Can postpartum core rehabilitation be done at home? +
Yes. Home physiotherapy can be especially convenient during the postpartum period, allowing rehabilitation to be integrated into your daily environment and routine.
