Understanding Balance & Coordination

Stable movement depends on many systems working together.

Balance is the ability to maintain control of the body while sitting, standing or moving. Coordination refers to the ability to organize different body movements smoothly and accurately. Both are important for everyday activities such as walking, turning, climbing stairs, reaching, getting up from a chair and moving safely around the home.

Balance and coordination can become impaired for many different reasons. Neurological conditions, vestibular disorders, stroke, Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, peripheral neuropathy, injuries, weakness, deconditioning and changes associated with ageing can all contribute to movement difficulties.

The exact problem is different for every person. Someone may mainly struggle with standing balance, while another person may have difficulty coordinating their legs during walking. Physiotherapy therefore begins by understanding how the person's movement is affected and which activities are most important to them.

Physiotherapy can incorporate repeated practice of meaningful movements. Activities may involve reaching, stepping, controlled transfers, walking tasks or coordinated movements of different body segments.

Repetition and appropriate progression are important. The task should be challenging enough to encourage active control while remaining safe and achievable. The specific exercises depend on the underlying neurological or musculoskeletal problem.

Walking & Fall Prevention

Safer walking is about more than simply walking faster.

The therapist can also identify environmental factors that may increase fall risk and provide practical recommendations where appropriate. A home exercise programme can then complement supervised treatment.
