Therapeutic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves delivered through a treatment head placed over the skin. It is used in physiotherapy as an adjunctive modality, particularly when pain or local tissue symptoms need additional symptom-management support.

Evidence for therapeutic ultrasound is condition-specific. Some reviews report improvements in pain and function, particularly in knee osteoarthritis, while other reviews describe low or uncertain certainty of evidence. It is therefore best considered an adjunct rather than a stand-alone treatment.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis included 21 randomized controlled trials involving 1,315 patients. Therapeutic ultrasound was associated with improvements in pain and WOMAC total scores. Treatment parameters appeared to influence the observed effects.
