Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation, or NMES, uses electrical impulses delivered through surface electrodes to produce controlled muscle contractions. It can be used when voluntary muscle activation is reduced or when additional stimulation is appropriate within a rehabilitation programme.
- Muscle Activation Can assist activation of muscles when voluntary contraction is difficult or insufficient.
- Strength Support May help improve muscle strength when combined with an appropriate exercise programme.
- Functional Rehabilitation Can be integrated into rehabilitation to support movement and functional recovery in selected cases.
Research supports NMES as a useful adjunct in selected rehabilitation settings. Its effectiveness depends on the condition, muscle group, stimulation parameters and how it is combined with active exercise.
Knee Osteoarthritis
A systematic review and meta-analysis found that NMES may improve quadriceps muscle strength and physical function in people with knee osteoarthritis. Effects on pain were less consistent.
