What Is Muscle Stimulation

Electrical stimulation to support muscle activation.

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation, or NMES, uses electrical impulses delivered through surface electrodes to produce controlled muscle contractions. It can be used when voluntary muscle activation is reduced or when additional stimulation is appropriate within a rehabilitation programme.

Muscle Weakness Can be considered when voluntary muscle activation or strength is reduced.
Neurological Rehabilitation May be used in selected neurological conditions to facilitate muscle activation and movement.
Sports Rehabilitation Can complement strengthening and rehabilitation when clinically appropriate.
What The Research Says

Research supports NMES as a useful adjunct in selected rehabilitation settings. Its effectiveness depends on the condition, muscle group, stimulation parameters and how it is combined with active exercise.

Knee Osteoarthritis

A systematic review and meta-analysis found that NMES may improve quadriceps muscle strength and physical function in people with knee osteoarthritis. Effects on pain were less consistent.

Total Knee Arthroplasty

NMES has been studied after total knee replacement. Evidence suggests it can help improve quadriceps strength and functional outcomes when incorporated into postoperative rehabilitation.

Stroke Rehabilitation

Electrical stimulation has been investigated in stroke rehabilitation to support motor recovery, muscle activation and functional movement. Benefits vary according to the technique and rehabilitation context.

Combining electrical stimulation with active rehabilitation may provide additional benefits in selected patients compared with passive stimulation alone.

In Physiotherapy

Treatment begins with clinical assessment and selection of the appropriate muscle and stimulation parameters. Surface electrodes are positioned over the target muscle, and intensity is gradually adjusted according to the treatment goal and patient tolerance. NMES is often combined with voluntary exercise and functional movement.

What Muscle Stimulation Does Not Do

NMES does not replace active exercise or functional rehabilitation. Electrical stimulation can produce muscle contraction, but long-term improvements in strength and function generally require an appropriate rehabilitation programme.
