What Is Infrared Therapy

Therapeutic heat for selected rehabilitation needs.

Infrared therapy uses infrared radiation to deliver energy to the body and produce a local warming effect. In physiotherapy, infrared heat may be used as an adjunct for temporary symptom relief and to prepare an area for movement or other rehabilitation techniques.

  • Temporary Pain Relief Local heat may help reduce pain and improve comfort for selected musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Muscle Relaxation Warming tissues may temporarily reduce muscle stiffness and improve comfort during movement.
  • Preparation For Exercise Heat may be used before movement or exercise when appropriate to help improve comfort.
Where It May Be Useful
Musculoskeletal Pain May provide short-term comfort in selected painful musculoskeletal conditions.
Muscle Stiffness Local warming may help temporarily improve comfort when muscles feel tight or stiff.
Joint Stiffness Heat may be used before movement to improve comfort and facilitate active rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation Support Can be combined with exercise, mobility work and other physiotherapy interventions.
What The Research Says

Infrared therapy is a form of superficial heat treatment. Evidence for therapeutic heat supports short-term symptom relief in some musculoskeletal conditions, but the evidence is not specific enough to claim that infrared therapy alone changes the underlying disease or guarantees recovery.

Knee Osteoarthritis

A systematic review of superficial heat and cold applications found that heat can provide short-term improvements in pain and function in people with knee osteoarthritis, although the certainty and durability of effects vary.

Chronic Low Back Pain

A Cochrane review found that superficial heat can provide small short-term reductions in pain and disability for acute or subacute low back pain. Evidence for long-term benefit remains limited.

Infrared Radiation

Infrared radiation has been investigated in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, with studies exploring effects on pain, circulation and physical function. Results vary substantially according to the type of infrared intervention and clinical condition.

Heat As An Adjunct

Clinical evidence generally supports superficial heat as a symptom-management option rather than a stand-alone treatment. Active rehabilitation remains important when the goal is restoring strength, mobility and function.

In Physiotherapy

Treatment begins with clinical assessment and selection of an appropriate heat source and treatment duration. The clinician monitors skin response and patient comfort. Infrared therapy may be followed by mobility exercises, stretching, strengthening or other active rehabilitation when clinically appropriate.

What Infrared Therapy Does Not Do

Infrared therapy should not be presented as a guaranteed method of healing damaged tissue or eliminating chronic pain. Its main role is temporary symptom management and preparation for rehabilitation when appropriate.
