What Is IFT

Interferential current for selected pain conditions.

Interferential therapy, commonly called IFT or IFC, uses two or more medium-frequency electrical currents that interact to produce a therapeutic stimulation pattern. It is primarily used in physiotherapy for symptom management, particularly pain, and is usually considered alongside active rehabilitation.

Where It May Be Useful
Knee Osteoarthritis Evidence suggests improvements in short-term pain and function, with some evidence of longer-term pain improvement.
Chronic Low Back Pain May reduce pain and disability immediately after treatment in chronic non-specific low back pain.
Musculoskeletal Pain Has been studied across different painful musculoskeletal conditions as an electrotherapy option.
Rehabilitation Support May be used to support symptom management while progressing movement and exercise.
What The Research Says

Evidence for IFT is condition-specific. Some systematic reviews report meaningful pain reduction, while others find little additional benefit when IFT is added to standard treatment. It should therefore be used as an adjunct rather than presented as a stand-alone cure.

Knee Osteoarthritis

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials involving 493 patients found significant improvements in short-term and long-term pain, along with short-term improvement in WOMAC function scores.

Chronic Low Back Pain

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis included 13 randomized controlled trials with 1,367 participants. Moderate-quality evidence suggested that IFT probably reduces pain and disability immediately after treatment compared with placebo, but benefits were not maintained at intermediate follow-up.

Musculoskeletal Pain

A 2022 systematic review included 35 trials. IFT alone showed a pain-relieving effect compared with placebo, but it was not clearly superior to other active treatments or standard care.

IFT Compared With TENS

A systematic review and meta-analysis of eight studies involving 825 participants found that IFT and TENS had similar effects on pain and functional outcomes overall.

In Physiotherapy

Treatment begins with clinical assessment and selection of appropriate electrode placement and stimulation parameters. Patient comfort and response are monitored throughout the session. Where appropriate, IFT is combined with exercise, movement training and other evidence-based rehabilitation strategies.

What IFT Does Not Do

IFT should not be presented as a treatment that repairs the underlying cause of pain on its own. Its primary role is symptom management. The broader rehabilitation plan remains important for restoring movement, strength and function.
