Meniscus Surgery Rehabilitation

Meniscus Surgery
Rehabilitation

Focused physiotherapy after meniscus surgery to restore knee movement, rebuild strength, improve walking and gradually return to everyday activity.

Rehabilitation depends on the type of surgery, tear pattern, repair or meniscectomy, associated injuries, surgeon's instructions and individual recovery.

Recovery Focus Restore movement. Rebuild your knee.
After Meniscus Surgery

Surgery is one step. Recovery is the next.

After meniscus surgery, the knee may have pain, swelling, reduced movement and weakness. Physiotherapy helps restore these functions progressively.

The rehabilitation plan is not identical for every patient. A meniscus repair generally requires different precautions from a partial meniscectomy.

The aim is to restore useful knee function while respecting the healing tissue and the instructions provided by the surgical team.

Physiotherapy Focus

Simple goals. Progressive rehabilitation.

Treatment is progressed according to symptoms, movement, strength and the specific surgical procedure.

01

Pain & Swelling

Appropriate activity, positioning and exercise can help manage postoperative symptoms.

02

Knee Movement

Physiotherapy works toward restoring appropriate knee range of motion within the prescribed limits.

03

Quadriceps Strength

Progressive strengthening helps address weakness and improve lower-limb function.

04

Walking & Balance

Weight-bearing and walking are progressed according to the surgical procedure and medical instructions.

05

Functional Recovery

Squatting, stairs and other activities are gradually reintroduced when clinically appropriate.

Why Surgery Type Matters

Meniscus Repair

The torn meniscus is repaired with the aim of preserving tissue. Rehabilitation may involve more specific restrictions on movement and weight-bearing while the repair heals.

Partial Meniscectomy

Damaged tissue is removed rather than repaired. Recovery can therefore follow a different rehabilitation pathway, depending on the procedure and the patient's clinical status.

Recovery Journey

Progress at the right pace.

Recovery timelines vary. Your rehabilitation should follow the surgical procedure, healing response and instructions from your surgeon.

EARLY

Protect & Restore

Manage symptoms, restore appropriate movement and begin safe muscle activation.

MIDDLE

Strength & Control

Progress strengthening, balance and functional loading as permitted.

LATER

Return to Activity

Gradually return to higher-level activities when adequate function and clinical criteria have been achieved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Meniscus surgery rehabilitation, explained simply.

A few common questions patients ask after surgery.

When should physiotherapy start after meniscus surgery?
Rehabilitation often begins early, but the exact timing and exercises depend on whether the meniscus was repaired or partially removed and on the surgeon's postoperative instructions.
Is rehabilitation different after meniscus repair?
Yes. A repaired meniscus needs time to heal, so movement and weight-bearing restrictions may be different from those after partial meniscectomy.
Can physiotherapy help after meniscus surgery?
Yes. The 2024 AAOS guideline states that physical therapy and rehabilitation may benefit people recovering from meniscal surgery.
When can I walk normally again?
It depends on the procedure, healing and your individual progress. Walking should be progressed according to the surgeon's restrictions and your physiotherapist's assessment rather than a fixed timeline.
Can I return to sports after meniscus surgery?
Many patients can return to appropriate physical activity, but higher-level sport should be introduced only after adequate strength, movement, control and functional recovery have been achieved.
Can rehabilitation be done at home?
For appropriate patients, home-based physiotherapy can be used to guide exercises, walking, strength and functional recovery. The programme should still be individualized to the surgery and recovery stage.
Evidence Based Physiotherapy

Rehabilitation has a role after meniscus surgery.

The 2024 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Clinical Practice Guideline states that physical therapy and rehabilitation may benefit patients recovering from meniscal surgery.

Clinical point: The AAOS guideline also emphasizes preserving as much functional meniscal tissue as possible when surgery is indicated. Rehabilitation should be individualized according to the surgical procedure and clinical recovery.
