Meniscus Surgery
Rehabilitation
Focused physiotherapy after meniscus surgery to restore knee movement, rebuild strength, improve walking and gradually return to everyday activity.
Surgery is one step. Recovery is the next.
After meniscus surgery, the knee may have pain, swelling, reduced movement and weakness. Physiotherapy helps restore these functions progressively.
The rehabilitation plan is not identical for every patient. A meniscus repair generally requires different precautions from a partial meniscectomy.
The aim is to restore useful knee function while respecting the healing tissue and the instructions provided by the surgical team.
Simple goals. Progressive rehabilitation.
Treatment is progressed according to symptoms, movement, strength and the specific surgical procedure.
Pain & Swelling
Appropriate activity, positioning and exercise can help manage postoperative symptoms.
Knee Movement
Physiotherapy works toward restoring appropriate knee range of motion within the prescribed limits.
Quadriceps Strength
Progressive strengthening helps address weakness and improve lower-limb function.
Walking & Balance
Weight-bearing and walking are progressed according to the surgical procedure and medical instructions.
Functional Recovery
Squatting, stairs and other activities are gradually reintroduced when clinically appropriate.
Meniscus Repair
The torn meniscus is repaired with the aim of preserving tissue. Rehabilitation may involve more specific restrictions on movement and weight-bearing while the repair heals.
Partial Meniscectomy
Damaged tissue is removed rather than repaired. Recovery can therefore follow a different rehabilitation pathway, depending on the procedure and the patient's clinical status.
Progress at the right pace.
Recovery timelines vary. Your rehabilitation should follow the surgical procedure, healing response and instructions from your surgeon.
Protect & Restore
Manage symptoms, restore appropriate movement and begin safe muscle activation.
Strength & Control
Progress strengthening, balance and functional loading as permitted.
Return to Activity
Gradually return to higher-level activities when adequate function and clinical criteria have been achieved.
Meniscus surgery rehabilitation, explained simply.
A few common questions patients ask after surgery.
